Happy International Woman’s Day everyone! Here are some hard and startling facts from the Independent, a UK newspaper that reiterates the importance of this day. This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is “inspiring change“.
This made me thinking about everyone who inspires me to grow: from my amazing mother who has always supported every decision that I have made, my best friends and boyfriend who always provide support and encouragement, an old college roomie who is an amazing working mom to happy twin girls to a uni friend who has taken her passion and created a successful business and my brother who supports his daughter as she continues to grow and develop. Behind every successful, amazing and inspiring woman and man are her/his family and friends. I love watching men and women work together to support and inspire each other to achieve greatness.
Another person who has inspired me (and probably most of this planet) is activist and Nobel Prize nominee Malala Yousafzai who faced fear and death to stand up for growth and education for girls. Malala’s story is a powerful one, which overcomes fear to create inspiration and action. This is something we can all learn from.
“You may not always have a comfortable life, and you will not always be able to solve all of the world’s problems at once, but don’t ever underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious, and hope can take on a life of its own.” – Michelle Obama
Humans are creative. We are gifted with a powerful imagination. Are you convinced you don’t have a creative bone in your body? What is your greatest fear? Chances are you’re thinking of a very vivid, colourful and passionate fear right now. How’s that for creative?
Fear is just a mixture of ideas that is fed by our imagination. Sometimes we let these imaginations dictate our lives. We need to remind ourselves who is in control of our lives and our happiness. Is it our fear of what may/may not happen or is us (who are strong enough to persevere through the worst and soak up the best life has to offer)?
“Do the one thing you think you cannot do. Fail at it. Try again. Do better the second time. The only people who never tumble are those who never mount the high wire. This is your moment. Own it.” – Oprah Winfrey
Fear can be one of two things. It can either extinguish your inspiration or it can provide you with the motivation to rise to greatness. It’s your decision. What are you going to let win? Are you going to let fear and the story you created in your mind stop you from achieving your dream? Or are you going to face life with all its ups and downs, face those fears and strive for those dreams? Chances are those stories your fear fed you never come to pass and what you experienced by taking a risk is more glorious than you could ever imagine. x
